The wind season is from November to August, but the wind is most consistent from February to June. During these months, the thermal winds start. Around midday (sometimes before) the heat generated from the earth heated by the sun adds up to the normal wind generating a powerful consistent wind.

When you get to the town, you will start seeing a combination of wooden houses and typical Mexican constructions, all of them with very lively colors. Right after, you can see the lighthouse; built on the remainings of old Mayan ruins that welcome the visitors. El Cuyo is a small beachside community where you can enjoy a typical and quiet environment of a port town that invites you to relax and enjoy the beauty of its nature.
El Cuyo makes part of the Rio Lagartos reserve, a warm home for the pink flamingo and other animal species. About 18,000 birds color the nesting territory in pink. In the area, a total of 340 species of birds, 50 of mammals and 95 of reptiles coexist. El Cuyo is also a reproduction place for white or green turtle and even the hawksbill turtle. You can easily see some of the flamingos feeding near the town’s small wood dock on the lagoon side.
During some months of the year you can see how the sun rises from the sea in the mornings and how it goes down that same sea in the afternoons. . Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, with amazing bright colors.
The peacefulness in this town’s atmosphere is unique. By looking into the locals’ faces, you can tell that sometimes in life we do not need much. Here, locals are always smiling and willing to help out.
The food is very traditional. You can find typical Mexican restaurants with fresh fish, lobster and shrimp at a very low price. The most famous restaurant here is La Conchita, made entirely of wood and with tables that have a small palapa (thatched roof hut) on top for sun protection
Excursions near El Cuyo
There is a great number of exciting adventures and excursions in the proximities of El Cuyo, including the exploration of the Mayan ruins, swimming in cenotes (natural deep pools), visiting cities and colonial Spanish towns, trekking in national parks, photographing hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos, swimming with whale sharks and stingrays, and many more places that await you around this town.
Some recommended excursions are: Las Coloradas, the Mayan ruins of Ek Balam, Cenote Samula, and Holbox Island.
Las Coloradas (Lagoas Rosadas): Just one-hour drive on the lagoon side is the road of the pink lagoons, a unique scenery often filled with thousands of flamingos.
Ek Balam is one of the last remaining archeological sites discovered in Yucatan and perhaps one of the most important Mayan ruins ever found. It is located just 2-hour drive from El Cuyo.
